What is Landscape Architecture?

Institute of Landscape Architect Malaysia, ILAM defined that Landscape architecture seamlessly blends design and environmental harmony, marrying art with science to enhance both urban and rural spaces, bridging the connection between people and nature. The scope of landscape architects is vast, ranging from planning Olympic sites and managing national parks to crafting public squares and parks. Their work not only nurtures communities but also addresses pressing issues like climate change, sustainable communities, water management, housing, and hunger prevention. With a holistic perspective, landscape architects emerge as natural leaders, adept at communication across various professions and spearheading multidisciplinary projects. Ultimately, landscape architecture is not merely a profession of the future but a profession shaping a better future.

 

Role of Landscape Architects

The scope of work for a Landscape Architect can vary dramatically. Many landscape architects are involved with master planning, site planning, landscape design, project management and implementation across a diverse, wide range of projects. Landscape Architects are involved with:

  • Urban planning and design
  • Open spaces and communal spaces
  • Recreational spaces and tourism infrastructure
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Cultural and history preservation
  • Biodiversity preservation

Acts and Policies Related to Landscape Architects in Malaysia

In Malaysia, there is currently no dedicated legislative act specifically addressing landscape architects. Nevertheless, landscape architects in the country are subject to relevant acts and policies governing their practice.

  1. Act 171: Local Government Act 1976
  • Public Parks By-Laws
  • Department of National Landscape is established under Ministry of Housing and Local Government to construct national policies and guidelines for landscape architecture.

 

  1. Act 172: Town and Country Planning Act 1976
  • Section 12: Preparation of Draf Rancangan Tempatan (landscape part)
  • Section 21c: Entitled person to submit proposal and drawing for landscape development
  • Section 35a: Preparation of Tree Conservation and Landscape Management for Tree Preservation Order
